# Giving SHADOWFRAG its sound

By the SHADOWFRAG developer · Development · Oct 26, 2026 · 3 min read

The sound pass follows actions from preparation to recovery, adds wordless ninja voices and tutorial narration, and introduces a studio for hearing edits in the running game.

Meeting [Master Hejian](https://shadowfrag.com/glossary/#term-the-crimson-path) during [The Crimson Path](https://shadowfrag.com/glossary/#term-the-crimson-path) story tutorial. Engine capture: 2026-10-24.

I wanted the sound to follow an entire action: drawing a bow, releasing it, hearing contact and knowing when the weapon is ready again. This pass also gives the ninjas short, wordless effort sounds and lets [Master Hejian](https://shadowfrag.com/glossary/#term-the-crimson-path) speak the instructions in [The Crimson Path](https://shadowfrag.com/glossary/#term-the-crimson-path).

The installed [sound bank](https://shadowfrag.com/glossary/#term-audio-cue) for this pass contains **185 clips across 106 [active cues](https://shadowfrag.com/glossary/#term-audio-cue)**. A cue is a sound event the game can trigger; the clips are the recordings used for those events. Existing hit sounds, [shield](https://shadowfrag.com/glossary/#term-shield)\-break choices, announcer takes and cosmetic kill sounds remain available. The work changes game sound, without adding background music.

## Hearing when a weapon is ready

Shinobi, Spear, Thunder and Arctic have distinct firing and readiness sounds. A readiness cue follows the owner's actual [cooldown](https://shadowfrag.com/glossary/#term-cooldown) and plays once per shot. It is cancelled if the relevant life, weapon or session changes. The cue reports readiness; it cannot permit firing before the game rules do.

Movement, attacks, hurt and landings use short ninja effort sounds. Limits for each actor keep repeated jumps and crowds from triggering an unbounded number of them. Bow handling uses quiet cord friction and wooden flex, while grenades and nets use brief cloth and rope sounds. Playtest feedback led to a separate pass replacing **five handling recordings** with quieter takes.

## Letting the tutorial be heard

[The Crimson Path](https://shadowfrag.com/glossary/#term-the-crimson-path) has **17 spoken lines**, each tied to a particular stage. Narration can pause and resume, with captions in the field, on the held map and beneath the armory panel. Finishing a stage retires its line so an old instruction does not continue over the next task.

Speech gently lowers effects and ambience while leaving private hit feedback clear. The ambience uses **six environment families**, each with two recordings of unequal length. Their levels and filtering are prepared offline. The game's native [audio mixer](https://shadowfrag.com/glossary/#term-audio-callback) combines those prepared samples; it does not call a sound-generation service during a match.

## Trying a new take in the running game

[Sound Studio](https://shadowfrag.com/glossary/#term-sound-studio) joins [Map Studio](https://shadowfrag.com/glossary/#term-map-studio) and [Texture Workshop](https://shadowfrag.com/glossary/#term-texture-workshop) as a local authoring tool. You can search or browse cues, compare the current recording with a replacement, trim its waveform, adjust levels and fades, and assign imported WAV or MP3 files. Imports are converted to **[mono 48 kHz PCM](https://shadowfrag.com/glossary/#term-pcm-audio)**: uncompressed, single-channel audio with 48,000 samples per second. The original files are retained.

A background worker loads and validates a replacement bank. The game adopts it using the existing audio lock, which coordinates the change with playback. Sounds already playing keep their samples; later triggers use the replacements, and ambience [crossfades](https://shadowfrag.com/glossary/#term-audio-mixing) between versions. File loading and decoding stay out of the [audio callback](https://shadowfrag.com/glossary/#term-audio-callback), the part that must keep supplying sound as the game runs.

Assignments support undo and restore. Categories, favourites and recoverable Trash help organize the library. Applying a local swap updates the running game; explicitly publishing assets also backs them up for future builds that embed the bank. Reserved design slots stay inactive until the game has an event to trigger them.

Checks cover assets, cue timing, narration, the [native mixer](https://shadowfrag.com/glossary/#term-audio-callback) and the studio workflow. They can establish whether those systems behave as intended. The final balance of tone, volume and repetition still needs actual play and listening.
